34 Futurist Innovation

To be good at innovation, the most important thing is knowing what you want to achieve. If you don’t have a clear goal or problem to solve, technology can quickly become a distraction. Innovation isn’t just about using the latest tools—it’s about having a purpose. Once you know what you’re trying to do, the right technology will naturally fall into place. The technology itself is just a tool; it’s the vision that matters most.

There’s no shortage of technology today. From AI to renewable energy, there are countless options available to help bring ideas to life. But having too many choices can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to focus on the problem you’re solving.

YOU – together with your colleagues – are the experts in YOUR organisation and its business… and where its future SHOULD be.

You know better than anyone what the future of your organisation should look like. What is valuable to your clients and stakeholders? Where might they want more help? What do they value? What are the actions that will create the future organisation you want to be? You don’t need to know all the answers – you can experiment – but trust that you know how to express the character and purpose of your organisation through its actions. What do you want to be? How can you go about testing and experimenting on making things better for your future? Knowing your goal makes it easier to pick the right tech for the job.

Trust that there is a technology out there that can help.

Modern technology is incredibly flexible. You can do just about anything you can think of… and you don’t always need to create something from scratch. Often, the best innovations come from combining existing tools in new ways. If you know what you’re trying to achieve, you can adapt and use available technologies to suit your needs. This approach saves time and resources, allowing you to focus on understanding and solving the problem, not reinventing the wheel.

In the end, being good at innovation means having a strong vision, a willingness to explore and learn – and letting technology help you get there. Your job is to expand knowledge about the journey – no-one else can do that for you. There’s a lot of technology out there, but it’s only useful if it’s applied to a meaningful goal – and you own the goal.

With the right focus, you can use technology to solve almost anything.
